Artist's Profile: KOTO-TSURUGI Junya
Kototsurugi was born in July 1960 in Fukuoka prefecture. As a wrestler in the Sadogatakebeya stable, he reached the rank of 46 within the Sandanme division.
Having retired in September 1986, he currently works as a sumo cartoonist and personality for Japan Sports Agent (JSA).
Even as a child, Koto-tsurugi had an interesting in drawing.
He became known within the sumo world for his unusual choice to contribute illustrations to sports magazines as a wrestler. He began his formal career as a cartoonist in 1990, publishing a regular column called “Yagura Taiko no Shi” in the magazine “Manga Sports”, published by Hobunsha. He continues to produce manga works based on his own experiences as a sumo wrestler. He also designs kesho-mawashi for sumo wrestlers. Recent works include illustrations for the kesho-mawashi of wrestlers Koto-shogiku, Koto-nishiki, and Koto-oshu.
